Having your vehicle towed can be frustrating and expensive, especially if you’re not sure why it was towed or who to contact. We often hear from consumers dealing with towing-related concerns.  

While we can’t help with issues with towing companies, we created this information because it’s something we hear about a lot and there are a few things you can do to resolve the problem, depending on your situation. 

Issue with a towing company? Here’s what you need to know 

Here’s a quick breakdown of what to keep in mind if your vehicle has been towed. 

1. Find out who authorized the tow 

A good place to start is by finding out who called for the tow. If you don’t already know, the towing company may be able to tell you who authorized it. 

Depending on the circumstances, that could be a municipality, private property owner, strata, parking operator, law enforcement agency, or the Ministry of Transportation and Transit. Understanding who authorized the tow can help you determine where to direct your questions or concerns.

2. Ask for a clear breakdown of fees 

Once you’ve located your vehicle, don’t hesitate to ask for details about the charges. This can include towing fees, storage costs, or administrative charges. It’s also a good idea to keep any receipts or paperwork you’re given. 

3. Understand that different rules may apply

Not all towing situations are handled the same way. Different rules or processes may apply depending on where your vehicle was parked, such as: 

  • A municipal street  
  • Private property  
  • A strata complex  
  • A commercial parking lot 

4. Take a look at the signs and parking rules 

It may not help in the moment, but reviewing posted signage or parking terms can give you useful context about why the vehicle was towed.  In many cases, restrictions, time limits, or towing notices are posted on-site.

5. Know who may be able to help

We do not regulate towing companies, and this is not an area we can help with. 

Depending on the situation, you may want to contact: 

  • Your local municipality 
  • The property owner or parking operator 
  • Your strata corporation 
  • Law enforcement (non emergency) 
  • Your insurance provider 

If you can’t resolve the issue with the towing company directly, you may need to resolve the issue through the Civil Resolution Tribunal. Alternatively, you could contact a lawyer to find out more about your legal options.
