Freedom of Information (Access to Information)

Consumer Protection BC is committed to openness, transparency and protecting your privacy.

As a public body, we follow British Columbia’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA). This law gives you the right to access records we hold, while also protecting personal and sensitive business information.

Before you make a request

Many records are already available without a formal request. Public bodies proactively make information available wherever possible, so you may not need to submit a formal request.

We encourage you to:

  • Search our website
  • Contact us to ask if the information is already available

What can you request?

You can request access to:

  • Records about our programs, decisions and operations
  • Records that include your personal information

Per FOIPPA, it is important to recognize that you are requesting records and not answers to general questions.

Some information cannot be released, per FOIPPA. This includes information that would, if released:

  • Harm personal privacy
  • Harm business or third-party interests
  • Affect public safety or legal matters
