2. Compare prices before you buy

3. Know the return policy

Did you know businesses can set their own return and refund policies? In many cases, stores are not required by law to accept returns, offer exchanges, or provide store credit.
Before you buy, ask:

- Will I receive a refund, exchange, or store credit?

Online shopping can be convenient, but it’s important to do some research before you buy.

Using a gift card to help cover school supplies, clothing, or other back-to-school essentials? Before you use it, make sure you understand how it works.
In British Columbia, most prepaid gift cards cannot expire, and businesses generally cannot charge fees that reduce the value of the card over time. There are some exceptions, including promotional gift cards and cards that are only valid for a specific service, such as a pedicure.
Mall gift cards work a little differently and may have fees or other restrictions. Before you buy or use one, take a moment to check the terms and conditions.
