SAANICH, BC, July 16, 2026 – Important changes to BC’s consumer protection laws take effect August 1, 2026.

The amendments modernize consumer contract requirements and introduce rules many businesses need to know before signing new consumer contracts.

Most changes apply to contracts entered on or after August 1, 2026, while some provisions related to unfair contract terms have already been in force since March 31, 2025.

Key changes include:

  • New requirements to provide important contract information before a consumer agrees to a purchase, including cancellation, refund, exchange, and renewal policies.
  • More consistent disclosure requirements across different types of consumer contracts.
  • New rules for subscription renewals and contract changes.
  • Restrictions on certain door-to-door sales and financing arrangements.
  • Prohibited contract terms that unfairly limit consumer rights.
