Consumer Protection BC has issued a compliance order and administrative penalties against Amherst Funeral and Cremation Services Ltd, a licensed funeral provider based in Vancouver BC, for:
- Providing funeral services without obtaining written authorization from the person who, under section 5, has the right to control the disposition of the human remains, contrary to section 8(1) of the Cremation Interment and Funeral Services Act, an administrative penalty of $6,500
- Failing to handle human remains in their possession in a respectful manner, contrary to section 2 of the Cremation Interment and Funeral Services Regulation, an administrative penalty of $7,500
The business has been ordered to reimburse Consumer Protection BC inspection costs in the amount of $1,590 within 30 days.
By law, the business has 30 days to request a reconsideration of the decision.
All money received from administrative penalties is deposited into the Consumer Advancement Fund (as required by section 169 of the BPCPA).
