Administrative fee change for funeral services providers

COVID-19 has fundamentally changed the BC marketplace and we know that many of our licensed businesses have been severely impacted. We also know that consumers are facing new risks such as price gouging and uncertainty regarding the delivery of goods or services that they have already paid for.

Consumer Protection BC has also been impacted. We are mandated to operate in a cost recovery manner and have taken the necessary steps to reduce expenses, increase efficiencies and focus on our core work on behalf of licensed businesses and consumers. If you want to learn about how we have shifted our strategic and financial direction, please review our amended 2020-2022 Business Plan.

A fee review was scheduled for this year as current fee schedules expire on December 31, 2020. Our legislation requires that we consult with licensed businesses about fee changes and provide 90-days’ notice prior to a fee change being implemented. Given the situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be delaying this fee review until a future date and have determined that 2021 licensing fees will remain at 2020 rates.

We are, however, planning to make one change for the funeral sector. This will be to increase the administrative fee payable under the funeral provider’s licence by $10.

Starting January 1, 2021, this fee will increase from the current $30 to $40. It will remain at $40 for at least three years. This fee has not been adjusted since 2015 and previous sector feedback indicated that changing this fee less frequently and keeping it at the same level for several years is preferable to adjusting it year to year. For your information, here is the 2021 fee schedule for your sector.

A consultation survey has been prepared to ensure that you understand our rationale for raising this administrative fee. The survey also includes questions about how you are applying exemptions related to this fee. The survey will be open from August 7 until August 28. Once the survey is complete, we will provide a summary of the results and deliver an official fee notification at least 90 days before any changes come into effect on January 1, 2021. Here is the link to the survey.
