Administrative fee change for funeral services providers

Consumer Protection BC is an independent, not-for-profit corporation. The Provincial Government maintains legislation and regulations that task Consumer Protection BC with regulating and licensing your sector. We are required by law to recover costs by setting licensing and other fees and charges.  

We are notifying you that one of the fees in your sector is changing beginning in 2021. When changing or introducing fees, we are required to consult with you and to provide at least ninety (90) days’ notice that the fee is changing. We conducted a consultation with you specifically regarding the funeral service administration fee from July 30 to August 30, 2020, which included an online survey that ran from August 7 to 28, 2020. 7.5% of the sector completed the online survey and 87% of respondents stated that they understood the fee changes.  

Description of fee changes  

Our Board of Directors has approved the following fee changes effective January 1, 2021:  

Licensing and other fees and charges for 2021 will stay at the 2020 rates, except for:  

• The funeral service administrative fee is increasing from $30 to $40. This fee will remain at $40 for at least the next three years.  
• The exemption for the funeral service administrative fee has been updated to read: 

Exemptions from the administrative fee are (i) death registrations where the services are paid for by the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee, the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, the federal department of Veterans Affairs, the federal department of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC) and (ii) death registrations in respect of an infant either stillborn or deceased at less than seven days of age
