{June 12, 2017} VICTORIA, BC – Consumer Protection BC has issued a compliance order and administrative penalties totaling $5,600 against Maple Ridge Funeral Chapel Ltd., a funeral services provider based in Maple Ridge BC, for violating BC’s consumer protection and funeral services laws for:

  • Failing to disclose to consumers, in writing, prior to entering into a preneed funeral services contract: (i) the portion of the insurance premiums paid by the consumer that would be refunded if the insurance is cancelled, and (ii) that sections 38 and 45 of the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act (BPCPA) do not apply if the insurance is cancelled, contrary to section 35(a)(i)(ii) of the BPCPA.

  • Failing to provide in preneed funeral services contracts a space for the written acknowledgement by the consumer that the consumer had received the information required by section 35 of the BPCPA, contrary to section 36(1)(d) of the BPCPA.

  • Failing to clearly set out and affix the price to each model of container in the display room, contrary to section 34(3) of the CIFSR.

The business has also been ordered to reimburse Consumer Protection BC partial costs for the inspection in the amount of $1,200 by July 12, 2017. All money Consumer Protection BC receives from administrative penalties is deposited into the consumer advancement fund (as required by section 169 of the BPCPA).
