Consumer Protection BC Cancels Globe-Time Travel Licence Print E-mail

{February 14, 2013}, VICTORIA, BC Consumer Protection BC has cancelled the travel licence of Globe-Time Travel Ltd., a travel agency located in Surrey, BC due to non-compliance with BC’s travel regulations.

As a result of an inspection generated by a complaint, we felt that the potential risk to consumers was such that it was in the public interest to cancel the business’ travel license effective immediately. The business has requested an opportunity to be heard with respect to this licensing action, as is their right under the law. A previous inspection resulted in a Compliance Order and Administrative Penalty being issued in November 2012 related to the business’ refusal to provide financial information as required by law.

Consumer Protection BC is aware that some travel consumers may be impacted by this situation. If you have booked with Globe-Time Travel and haven’t traveled yet, please contact your airline, hotel and any other tour operator to confirm all of your reservations. If your reservations aren’t confirmed, here are some tips on steps you may take before you travel:

  1. Talk to your airline, hotel and tour operators to determine if there are options available for you to rebook your travel arrangements.
  2. Contact a BC licensed travel agent to determine if they can assist you with rebooking alternative travel. To find a licensed BC travel agent, please visit www.travelrightsbc.ca.

In the unfortunate circumstance that the original travel services that you booked through Globe-Time Travel Ltd. were not provided and you are seeking a refund, here are some steps you can take:

  1. If you purchased travel services with a credit card, please call or write to the credit card company to determine if the charges can be reversed.
  2. If you purchased separate travel insurance, please call the insurance provider to see if it will cover the costs of the undelivered services.
  3. If these steps have been unsuccessful, you may be eligible to make a claim with BC's Travel Assurance Fund.(TAF)

The TAF is a fund of last resort and provides possible compensation for consumers who did not receive the contracted travel services they purchased through a BC-licensed travel agent. Claims may be made to the fund for the original cost of travel services paid for and not provided. For example, if you paid for flights and hotel accommodation and only the flights were not provided, your claim is limited to the cost of the flights as the hotel was able to provide the services. All claims to the TAF must be filed within six months from the date the travel services were not provided.

Consumer Protection BC is taking this opportunity to remind travellers to always book with a licensed BC travel agency or wholesaler. Eligibility to the TAF is available to both consumers and BC licensed travel agents. For more details about the Fund and to find a licensed travel agent or wholesaler, visit our website at www.travelrightsbc.ca.
