{February 16, 2012} The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) is now holding consultations for the development of regulations that will affect how air service prices are advertised in Canada. The intent of the new regulations is to ensure greater transparency for Canadians and allow consumers to easily determine the total price of an air service in order to make an informed choice.
The Government of Canada announced on December 16, 2011 that the Canadian Transportation Agency will proceed with developing regulations requiring air carriers to include all fees and taxes in their advertised prices, by bringing into force section 86.1 of the Canada Transportation Act. During the consultation phase of the development of these regulations, the Agency is meeting with and accepting written submission from stakeholder organizations including airlines, consumer groups and other interested parties. In addition, the Agency is actively seeking participation from individual Canadians using an online tool that allows participants to post their ideas on the matter. Any individual can also give the Agency a written submission via email if they prefer. Tell them what you think by visiting www.airservicesadvertising.ca. The online consultation will run until February 26. The Agency states that the results of the consultation will contribute to the initial drafting of the regulations. They will then pre-publish the draft regulations in Part I of the Canada Gazette to give all Canadians the opportunity to review and comment. It is expected that the final regulations will be published in Part II of the Canada Gazette by the end of 2012.
