Exhibition of Live Presentations Print E-mail

{September 29, 2009} - BURNABY BC - Under the Motion Picture Act, the definition of film includes pre-recorded motion pictures stored on 35mm, video, DVD and Blu-ray discs.

Accordingly, a live broadcast is not subject to classification requirements because the motion picture cannot be deemed to be pre-recorded. Distributors and exhibitors are advised that a live broadcast must be exhibited live - that is, shown at the time of its actual occurrence - in order to fall outside of the scope of the law. For example, if a live stage play is recorded and exhibited at a later time in a movie theatre, it must be submitted for classification. In contrast, if that play is exhibited in a movie theatre at exactly the same time it is occurring (i.e. a live feed), it does not meet the definition of film and it is not required to be submitted for classification.
