{October 17, 2007} - VICTORIA, BC – After a comprehensive review of its responsibilities under the Motion Picture Act (the Act) and Regulations, the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Authority (BPCPA) has determined that as of January 1, 2008, all general release video retailers operating in BC will be required to obtain and maintain video retailer licenses.
Licensing will provide the industry with the assurance that the BPCPA is tracking and monitoring businesses engaged in the sale and rental of home release video products. This change will also provide consumers with the comfort that businesses are not distributing adult videos to minors or engaging in other inappropriate practices. The licence application form and fee schedule information are posted here. All general release video retailers are required to complete and return the application information with the $58 annual fee no later than December 31, 2007, in preparation for the January 1, 2008 licence requirement date. All video retailer licences will be issued for a period of one year. A variety of payment methods are available including cheque, money order and major credit cards. Where a business fails to meet its obligations under the Act and Regulations, the BPCPA will take progressive enforcement action including penalties and in more serious cases, licence suspension or cancellation.
