The Business Practices and Consumer Protection Authority is pleased to be accepting responsibility for administering the Motion Picture Act and Regulations including film classification, licensing and compliance and enforcement services from the Province of British Columbia, effective July 1, 2007. The transfer of the film classification function represents the further consolidation of consumer protection services under the BPCPA, with the goal to better serve consumers, film distributors, retailers, theatres and other stakeholders. While the administration of the Motion Picture Act and Regulation is being transferred to the BPCPA, the Province will continue to be responsible for film classification policy and legislation. We expect that licensees will see no disruption in service with the change. Many of the day-to-day operations of film classification will remain the same in the short term. During the transition period, the Film Classification Office will remain at its current Vancouver location, with the same phone numbers, email addresses and other contact information. The licensing function will be transferred to Victoria, BC and more detailed information has been forwarded to licensees in a separate communication. Over the next several months, the BPCPA will be reviewing procedures and will continue to communicate any operational changes to stakeholders.
The Film Classification website will remain in its current format in the short term. Over the next few months, you will notice changes to the BPCPA website as we continue to incorporate information about our film classification functions and activities.
