{April 29, 2009} VICTORIA, BC – The Business Practices & Consumer Protection Authority (BPCPA) has received inquiries from both consumers and licensed travel agents regarding travel cancellations related to the recent Swine flu epidemic in Mexico. On April 27, 2009 the Public Health Agency of Canada issued a travel health warning that recommended Canadians postpone non-essential travel to Mexico. Many airlines, cruise lines and travel operators have responded by cancelling bookings to Mexico until a later date. This has left many travelers scrambling to salvage vacation plans. If your travel plans have been impacted by the recent travel cancellations, there are options available.
If you are a travel agent and your clients have been impacted by the recent travel cancellations, there are options available:
The BPCPA administers the Travel Assurance Fund (TAF) which provides a possible source of compensation for consumers who purchased travel services through a BC licensed travel agent and travel services are not provided. The TAF is a fund of last resort and the consumer must first try to obtain compensation through their travel insurance or credit card provider. Eligibility does not cover the cost of alternate travel services or where the travel service provider has offered alternate travel options. To find out more about the TAF please visit our website at www.bpcpa.ca. -30-
