What Are Eco Fees?
Eco fees are one way to fund recycling programs for the products you purchase. When you purchase an item - such as a beverage container, electronics, tires or paint to name a few - eco fees cover the cost for the responsible management of end of life products. This is in accordance with the Pollution Prevention Hierarchy, and includes recycling-depot operation, shipping, storage, breakdown, and recycling of the item.
All of these tasks are performed by independent operators. The fee is charged at the point of purchase to allow a no-charge recycling drop-off. In some cases, the product is processed and reused. In other instances, the product is recycled and reused as another product. Recycling helps to reduce pressures on our landfills, conserve our natural resources, and protect our environment.
