{March 31, 2006} VICTORIA – The Business Practices and Consumer Protection Authority of BC (BPCPA) is seeking qualified consumer representatives to serve on one of several industry advisory groups. “We are receiving excellent feedback from the advisory groups, especially with respect to industry issues,” said Board Chair, Frank Barr. “Now we are seeking additional consumer representatives to gain a broader perspective of consumer issues”.
The BPCPA is an independent not-for-profit corporation established to deliver consumer protection services throughout BC, promote fairness and understanding in the marketplace and administer in the public interest delegated legislation.
The legislation administered by the BPCPA provides for general consumer protection and progressive enforcement methods. While the legislation generally applies to most businesses in BC, it also regulates, or will regulate, a number of current and proposed industries including debt collection, travel services, telemarketing, funeral services, film classification and cosmetology. This includes licensing, inspecting, investigating, responding to inquiries and complaints, and educating consumers and businesses about their rights and responsibilities. The BPCPA Board of Directors has established various industry advisory groups to identify consumer and industry related issues and potential solutions for consideration by the BPCPA, provide feedback on any matters put forward by the BPCPA and consider other related matters. The BPCPA will be accepting general consumer expressions of interest on an on going basis to serve on the advisory groups and will be making appointments in coming months.
