Are you shopping online and want to know how you are protected? Find out from the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Authority at the Better Business Bureau Ethics Expo on September 15, 2005. The BPCPA will make a presentation on consumers’ rights with respect to distance sales contracts - those contracts made over the Internet or by telephone.
With the dramatic increase in sales over the Internet, innovative approaches to consumer protection were required. As a result, new legislation, such as the BC Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act, addresses distance sales contracts for the first time.
At the Ethics Expo, consumers will learn what information suppliers must provide before they enter into distance sales contracts, what they must disclose and when consumers can cancel the contracts. For example, if a supplier does not give the consumer a copy of the distance sales contract within 15 days of signing, the consumer may cancel the contract within 30 days. Consumers will also learn when a credit card company is required to refund or reverse credit card charges for distance sales contracts that the consumer cancels.
The BPCPA will feature consumer tips and information on consumer rights at their booth at the Ethics Expo. Consumers will be able to ask BPCPA experts in person about their questions on contracts to buy goods and services and other consumer issues.
The Ethics Expo is a consumer show that informs consumers about ways to protect themselves from frauds and scam. It will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2005 from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm at the Victoria Conference Center, 720 Douglas Street, Victoria, BC.
