In British Columbia, anyone who is trying to collect a debt must follow the proper debt collection practices within the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act. In addition, third party collectors (those collecting debts on behalf of the original creditor), bailiffs, and debt poolers are required to be licensed by Consumer Protection BC.
The Debt Collection Industry Regulation governs the licensing requirements for this industry. Part 3 of the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Regulation also outlines exemptions for credit reporting.
