Debit Card Skimming Print E-mail

Consumer Protection BC advises consumers to stay aware when shopping.  It is always smart to read the contract and ask about a return policy before making a purchase.  Unfortunately, there are times when you can become a victim of fraud even if you have done everything to be an informed consumer.

One way in which you can protect yourself is to be cautious around debit card fraud.  One form of debit card fraud is called “skimming”.  This is when the details of your debit card are stolen and used to take money from your account without your authority.  Here are some tips for consumers on how you can protect yourself from debit card fraud.

  • Always ensure the security of the debit card machine that you are using.  Suspicious acting individuals, a keypad that is not responding in a normal manner or a tarnished card reader can be signs of a breach in security.
  • Shield your keypad when entering your Personal Identification Number (PIN).
  • When using your debit card at retailers be aware of where the equipment is.  Equipment that records and reads your information from the cards magnetic strip may be hidden at cashier’s stations.
  • Change your PIN periodically to ensure the security of your information.
  • Don’t share your PIN with anyone.  It is your legal responsibility and if it is compromised you may not be eligible for compensation.
  • Don’t keep your PIN written down anywhere near your wallet or purse.
  • Consider using cash if you are uncertain about the security of your card.
  • Review your bank statement frequently to ensure your account has not been compromised.

If any of the above has occurred or you have other concerns contact your bank as soon as possible by phone. You may also want to consider submitting a written summary of your concern.  You should also contact your local authorities to notify them of potential debit card skimming.
