Taking dance lessons? Tips Around Continuing Service Contracts Print E-mail

In a continuing services contract you receive services over a period of time, rather than all at once. These types of contracts are limited to dance lessons, personal training, weight loss, self defense, gym and travel club memberships.

You must be given a copy of the contract within 15 days of signing of the contract.  You have until 10 days after you receive a copy of the contract to cancel for any reason.  If you do, the business must provide a refund within 15 days of cancellation.

Please review the tips below if considering entering into this type of contract:

  • Ask about the contract time commitment and billing details.
  • Ask if there is a charge to cancel your contract part way through the term. Finding out about your cancellation rights is very important.
  • Always read the fine print in the contract before signing it.
  • Always request a copy of your contract and keep it for future reference.
  • If you cancel your contract, make sure you have proof of cancellation.

Educate yourself about your rights and responsibilities prior to entering into any contract.  For more information about continuing services contracts please contact Consumer Protection BC toll free at 1-888-564-9963, via email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
