Natural Gas Marketing at Your Door |
|
|
|
As of May 1 2007, the BC Utilities Commission (BCUC) allowed natural gas marketers to sell long-term, fixed-price natural gas contracts directly to residential natural gas users. Previously, it was only possible for residential users to purchase their natural gas from Terasen Gas.
It’s important to note that, regardless of whom you purchase natural gas from – a gas marketer or Terasen Gas – Terasen Gas will continue to deliver the gas and charge for delivery and service installations. You will still receive a Terasen Gas bill. If you have purchased natural gas from a gas marketer, the marketer's rate per gigajoule will be displayed on your Terasen Gas bill.
Natural gas marketers are licensed by the BC Utilities Commission (BCUC) and are required to uphold the Code of Conduct and Rules for Natural Gas Marketers. You can expect to receive natural gas sales solicitations in-person, over the phone and through the mail. If someone shows up at your door unannounced and you agree to use their service or buy their product, you may have entered into a direct sales contract. Consumer Protection BC is responsible for regulating door-to-door/direct sales contracts and wants to provide you with a few tips on how to make an informed decision.
- Educate yourself on what needs to be included in the contract for it to be valid.
- Ensure that you receive a copy of the contract and understand what you are committing to before you sign.
- Know that you can change your mind. If the contract qualifies as a door-to-door sales contract under the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act, you have a 10-day period where you are able to change your mind and cancel the contract. You do not need a reason to cancel.
- If you decide to cancel, it’s best to provide this notice by e-mail, fax or registered letter so that you have proof of cancellation.
- Review the BCUC Code of Conduct and Rules for Natural Gas Marketers, which also sets out additional rights and responsibilities for both the consumer and marketer.
