Making Your New Year's Resolution Work for You Print E-mail

Many of the questions Consumer Protection BC gets from consumers in January are related to contracts they have entered into to get fit and healthy for the upcoming year. Here are some tips to help you before joining a gym or fitness related program.

  1. Do your research before joining. Determine what benefits are important to you, what services you need and what the time commitment is. Ask for a trial run of the fitness club - many will offer you the opportunity to try out their equipment and get a feel for the environment.
  2. Ask your friends about their experiences. Third party endorsements can help you make your decision and are a great way to find out about the good, the bad and the ugly.
  3. Ask questions. Know what is included with your membership and be sure that you aren’t being charged extra for something you don’t need.
  4. Give yourself time. Try not to feel pressured into making an immediate decision. By law, you only have 10 days to cancel if you change your mind. Make sure you're making the right choice.
  5. Know your cancellation rights. Educate yourself about your rights and responsibilities prior to entering into any contract. Always get the contract in writing and make sure you have proof of cancellation if you decide to terminate the contract within the appropriate timeframe.

The contracts you enter into with fitness clubs or weight loss programs are most often considered Continuing Service Contracts. By law, these contracts must disclose certain information to you, such as your cancellation rights. There is a lot to know about continuing service contracts so, if you still have questions, call Consumer Protection BC at 1 888 564-9963 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
