Tips on Making Retail Purchases |

Consumer Protection BC gets many questions from consumers about retail sales. In fact, we received over 1,500 calls on this topic in 2010. While we aren't responsible for regulating retail sales in BC, we want to offer the following tips to consumers to help them make more informed decisions when on their shopping adventure.
- Ask about returns and refunds. Retailers are not legally required to exchange an item or give you a refund simply because you changed your mind. Businesses set their own policies so always ask the store about their return policy before you buy.
- Mall cards can charge fees. It’s true that most gift cards can’t have fees or expiry dates anymore. However if you are buying a mall card for that teen in your life so they can shop on their own, you should know that these cards are allowed to have fees. (Note that the law doesn’t apply to pre-loaded credit cards.) Also, should the business close and you have an unredeemed gift card you may need to resolve the issue in Small Claims Court or contact the Superintendent of Bankruptcy for a refund.
- Read your receipts. It's always a good idea to take a look at your receipt before you leave the store. Mistakes and misunderstandings can happen and this way you can ensure that you were charged the correct amount.
- Read the fine print. If you have to sign a contract of any kind or agreement, always read all of the terms and conditions so that you know what you are agreeing to.
