{August 15, 2011} VICTORIA, BC – Consumer Protection BC is informing consumers that it has cancelled the funeral service provider licence of North Island Funeral Services Ltd. trading as Yates North Island Funeral Services located in Port Hardy, BC. This licensing action is in response to repeated issues of non-compliance with consumer protection law and follows a number of progressive actions taken by Consumer Protection BC. We are working with the principals of the business to ensure that they comply with the licence cancellation and that the appropriate arrangements are made to assist their existing customers. If consumers located on the North Island are in need of funeral services, we recommend that they contact Consumer Protection BC toll-free at 1-888-564-9963 or visit www.funeralrightsbc.ca to identify another licensed funeral provider. Consumers who have pre-need contracts with Yates North Island Funeral Services can call the contact information located on their contract to find out about their options. We also advise consumers to review their cancellation rights in the contract. In British Columbia, cemetery and crematorium operators, funeral providers, funeral directors, embalmers and apprentices are required to be licensed with Consumer Protection BC based on the requirements of the Cremation, Interment and Funeral Services Act and the Cremation, Interment and Funeral Services Regulation. The licensing and regulation of this industry helps to maintain a continuing high level of professionalism and integrity. The law protects consumers a variety of ways including prohibiting unfair practices and requiring businesses to hold prepaid money in trust, meet certain facility standards, and provide specific information in their contracts.
