Notice to Funeral Service Providers of Final Fee Schedule Print E-mail
VICTORIA – A fee schedule for funeral service providers in British Columbia was
announced today by the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Authority. The
fee schedule is effective September 15, 2005.

The BPCPA, an independent not-for-profit organization, assumed responsibility for
the oversight of business practices and consumer protection in British Columbia on
July 4, 2004. The BPCPA has been delegated the authority to set fees for the
industries it regulates. The fees are set to achieve full cost-recovery.

The fee schedule includes application fees for new or renewal licences for funeral
providers, embalmers, funeral directors or funeral director/embalmers. Application
fees for funeral providers will be the combined total of a base amount plus an
administrative fee for each death registered by the funeral provider in British
Columbia, as of September 15, 2005. The fees are required to offset BPCPA
operating costs to ensure that consumers are protected and receive all the rights
provided by law. The fee is not a tax and does not go to government revenues.

Consultation on the fee schedule was initiated in 2004 with the Cremation, Interment
and Funeral Services Advisory Group, a group is comprised of key industry and
consumer representatives. The Authority posted a proposed schedule on its website
in early February, 2005 in order to obtain input from all interested parties. Valuable
feedback was received and the Authority responded by revising the fee schedule.

The Authority has identified several exemptions to the funeral provider application
fees, such as services paid for by the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee, the
Ministry of Human Resources, the Federal Departments of Indian Affairs and
Northern Development, Veterans Affairs, the Last Post Fund and compassionate
services for an infant either stillborn or less than 7 days of age.
